Shocking images show huge Calderdale moorland blaze tackled by firefighters

Fire crews from West Yorkshire and Lancashire were called to an area around Widdop Reservoir at lunchtime yesterday (Sunday).

Initially four pumps and two specilist wildfire units and supporting crews were called to the incident in Hebden Bridge

The fire covered an area of 200 metres

Beaters, water backpacks and blowers were used to tackle the fire and one argo cat was deployed

However more firefighters were needed to get the moorland fire under control.

At the height of the widespread blaze eight pumps were mobilised.

This included additional support from appliances from across West Yorkshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

It wasn't until 7.50pm that the operation was scaled back as three pumps from West Yorkshire remained at the scene.

The remaining crews used beaters and ultra light portable pumps to keep the fire under control.
