Shop stays in fashion for 20 years

Customers at the Overgate Hospice charity shop in Brighouse helped celebrate their 20th anniversary in Brighouse town centre.

Staff from the shop in Bethel Street treated 150 guests to a piece of birthday cake and enjoyed the discounted shopping day in celebrating its special day.

Shop Manager Mrs Jacqueline Yates said: “The support from the people of Brighouse is outstanding.

“Every day many bags of donations are brought into the shop which are invaluable to the successful day to day running of the shop.

“Without these fantastic donations we could simply not exist.

“We also recycle many things, in fact there isn’t much that we can’t make money from.

“My team of dedicated volunteers are passionate about supporting the hospice and we continually welcome new volunteers coming forward.”

The shop, which was opened in 1995 by artist Ashley Jackson has stood on the same site since it’s opening to the present day.

In 2011 due to the increase in good quality designer clothing and accessories being donated, a second shop was opened next door.

Earlier this year saw the opening of the menswear section within the designer shop which has also proved to be extremely popular with the gents.

Many past volunteers visited the shop including some of the original volunteers who worked for Overgate when the shop was originally opened.

The two shops on Bethel Street currently have a team of 46 volunteers and three members of staff working for Overgate ensuring the smooth running of the shops.

The success of the shop and the dedication of the volunteers has led to them taking part in the popular Brighouse street markets, together with hosting their annual Glam and Glitz night, which this year is on November 3 and also organising their own Ladies Night at Berties at La Cachette in Elland which this year saw in excess of £8,200 being raised for the hospice.

They also take part in the Friends of Overgate Fashion Show at The Old Brodleians Rugby Club and the annual Overgate Fashion Show at the Shay Stadium in autumn.
