A PAIR of siblings are hoping to be reunited at the finish line - after one flew across the Atlantic to join his sister in a charity run.
Liz Carroll, from Norwood Green, and her brother Alistair will run for Overgate Hospice in the Leeds 10k tomorrow.
Alistair has finished the Chicago marathon three times and persuaded his sister, a netball player, to try their next running challenge.
“Al just called and said ‘So, come on, are we going to cross the line together’ so we signed up,” said mum-of-two Liz.
He landed in the UK on Wednesday, giving him just enough time to recover from his jetlag before their race.
They are running in memory of both their parents, who died of cancer.
Their dad, well-known amateur dramatics star Stuart Sutcliffe died aged 37, after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. Alistair was just six and his sister aged four.
Tragically, 30 years and one day earlier, his wife Sandra lost her 14-month battle with ovarian cancer.
Both their parents had performed with Halifax Amateur Operatic Society and Halifax Thespians, with Sandra even taking to the stage while pregnant with Alistair.
Sandra, who later remarried, worked at Peel Walker in Elland and taught at the Percival Whitley centre.
Liz joined friends to take part in the first Overgate 10k in Copley earlier this year and has continued to train hard to stay fit for the race. She hopes with her brother alongside her, they will cross the line together in 50 minutes.
“The care Mum received was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble and this is just to say thankyou for all their hard work.”
