Churchgoers in Cragg Vale had a surprise guest at their regular service on Sunday morning – DJ and television presenter Sir Jimmy Savile.
The well known media figure attended the service at the St John the Baptist in the Wilderness C of E church and spent time speaking to churchgoers afterwards.
"It was really special," said Vicar James Allison, "especially because he didn't announce that he was coming. He drops in occassionally and it's lovely.'
Sir Jimmy is a long term friend of the Cragg Vale church. The relationship began in the 1970s when he began raising money for the church and was made an honoury assistant warden. The connection came about as a result of his friendship with the vicar at the time.
