Work on Hookstone Chase was prioritised by the county council this year as a result of its badly damaged surface.

The authority’s £600,000 investment has meant that the top 200mm of the road’s surface has been reconstructed, ensuring a life of at least 20 years.

Hookstone Chase is a particularly well-used road in the town, linking Harrogate and Knaresborough and is heavily used by HGV’s.

Much of the road is also on a steep incline and County Councillor Don Mackenzie, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Highways admitted the road needed improvement.

He said: “This is very good news indeed for all users of Hookstone Chase.

“The road has been in a very poor state and therefore a priority for the current Harrogate highways programme. This extensive and thorough repair will undoubtedly be welcome.

Moreover our contractors worked efficiently to get the job done ahead of schedule and certainly in good time for the reopening of Hookstone Chase school after the summer holidays.”

The work to repair Hookstone Chase was finished four days ahead of schedule with contractors working evening hours only to minimise disruption to the travelling public.

“We are delighted that Hookstone Chase has finally been properly resurfaced”, said Coun Margaret Ann De Courcey-Bayley.

“All local councillors who have worked for the repair of this much-used and important route will be very glad that the work has now been completed.

“We are very grateful to the county council’s Harrogate highways office for prioritising a major restoration of this kind.”
