Slideshow: Blaze tears through moorland near Rishworth

Crews were called to the incident, close to the A672, at around 10pm.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said the fire was visible from the M62 motorway and the flame front covered around half a mile.

At the height of the blaze, eight crews were in attendance and specialist moorland equipment, along with leaf blowers, aquaback packs and beaters had to be used.

It’s thought the fire has now been brought under control and crews left the scene at around 3am.

Reader Michael D Smith sent in the pictures featured in the slide show and described what happened.

“By late Sunday evening strong winds whipping up the flames on a moorland fire causing it to spread rapidly with a wide front, presenting a challenge to the numerous fire crews in attendance.

“The heather, bilberry and moorland grasses are yet to sprout new spring growth. So despite the damp ground there is a lot of dry vegetation around at this time of year – and this is vulnerable to accidental or intentional ignition. “
