Sowerby Bridge woman at heart of community, dies aged 90

A WOMAN who was at the heart of the Sowerby Bridge community for decades has died aged 90.

Eileen Judson, of Willow View, was a former school teacher and her interests spanned music, history, public speaking and politics.

She was a Labour member of the former Sowerby Bridge Urban District Council for 18 years.

Her talks to local groups included an illustrated saunter from King Cross to Quarry Hill based in the mid-19th century along with discussions on ballet, music, the arts and religion.

She qualified as a religious education teacher in 1954 after working as a yarn tester in a textile mill.

Miss Judson taught at schools in Sowerby Bridge, Halifax, and Luddenden Foot.

Labour Party worker and Sowerby Bridge resident Barry Godfrey said Miss Judson, who retired from the council in the mid-1960s, was a popular woman.

“And, she was a very respected member of the council,” he said.

Her funeral service is on Tuesday at Park Wood Crematorium, Elland, at 10.30 am.
