Study launched into new route

Calderdale community group Ryburn Valley Greenway has unveiled a feasibility study into the proposed traffic-free, off-road route for cyclists, walkers and horse riders linking Sowerby Bridge, Triangle, Ripponden and Rishworth.

The in-depth study, compiled by leading transport charity Sustrans, was jointly funded by the group and Calderdale Council.

The group was set up after the 2014 Tour de France’s visit to Calderdale, with the aim of delivering a long term legacy project in the Ryburn Valley.

The study looks at potential routes for the proposed Greenway, which the group say is aimed at encouraging more families to cycle, walk and ride.

In particular, the group want to make the Greenway accessible to young children and the less able.

One outcome could see the Greenway start at Sowerby Bridge railway station, before using a combination of upgraded bridleways, footpaths and the route of the old Rishworth branch railway line to give a traffic-free alternative to the busy A58 and A672.
