The mother and father of eight children celebrated six decades of marriage surrounded by their huge family.

Sylvia and Thomas Costello, of Grove Crescent, Luddenden Foot, say they felt blessed to share their diamond wedding celebrations with their children, 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren at a special family party at their local Lord Nelson.

Sylvia, 77, and Thomas, 83, were married at St Malachy’s Church, Nursery Lane, Halifax, on March 26, 1955, when the blushing bride wore a blue suit, pictured.

In August that year, Sylvia gave birth to their eldest daughter Eileen and the family-orientated mother and father went on to nurture seven more children.

They are the proud parents of Eileen, Linda, Stephen, Hazel, Anthony, Helen, Terrance, Cynthia and Peter.

Sylvia said: “We always thought the more the merrier; the bigger the family the more fun we had - we used to play hide and seek in the house and every year we holidayed in Bridlington.”

Sylvia says she’s happy she could stay at home and bring her children up the way she wanted and Thomas worked at various Calderdale employers including Simplex, Holmfield, to provide for his family.

Now, the couple say they enjoy spending time with the Peter who was born in 1969.
