Talented musicians hit the right note

Ten musical-maestros aged between 11 and 17 competed for a place in the district heat of the Rotary National Young Musician Competition which took place at Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, in Halifax.

Performing before an audience of the music ranged from classical pieces to contemporary.

The competition was judged for the second year running by local composer, Lawrence Killian.

Event organiser, Linda Parker said: “The musical ability of these young musicians can be jaw-dropping, and it was this evening.

“They clearly enjoy their music too, and value the opportunity to showcase their talents.”

Lydia Wyatt, 17, a flautist from Greenhead College, was crowned the overall winner for her performance of Fantasie by Georges Hue and she will now go on to take part in the district final at the National Centre for Early Music in York .

She will be joined by 16-year-old Issy Haley-Porteous, a pupil of Crossley Heath School, who came first in her age group and second overall for her flute performance of Ballade by A.Perilhou.

The competition was judged for the second year running by local composer, Lawrence Killian.

and 12 year old Xiana Harron from Rishworth School won first place in her age group for her performance on violin of Czardas by Vittorio Monti, and was placed third overall. 

All three were presented with a trophy, a certificate and a cash prize.

Halifax Rotary Club President, Andrew Waite said: “The competition was a most enjoyable evening and an excellent advert for what Rotary do in the community, all the entrants should be really proud of their musical ability, as we were tonight.”
