BRIGHOUSE’S old swimming pool and two adjoining car parks are being put up for sale.
Calderdale Council had planned to sell the Mill Royd Street building to local businessman Bill Ibberson, of Younger Homes, after he put in an offer.
But following legal advice and two independent valuations of the site, the property and car parks are to be put on the open market instead.
A council spokesman said: “The council has a legal obligation to get the best possible price for Brighouse pool and the way to do that is by placing it on the open market.”
Colin Stout (Ind, Brighouse) welcomed the news and said he would like to see money from the sale ring-fenced for Brighouse projects.
He said: “I think as the building was built by the people of Brighouse, the pool does belong to them and it should benefit the town.
The 98-year-old building closed in June 2006 and has been vacant since.
It was replaced by a £5 million pool and fitness centre, which opened in Bradford Road last October.
The scheme has been voted the best community building in the Local Authority Building Control West Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards.
