A Northern Powergrid spokeswoman said 2,444 homes and businesses in postcodes HX1 and HX2 were affected by a fault on its network at around 10am.

She said 104 customers are still without electricity but that power should be fully restored by around 11.45am.

She said: “We have diverted electricity through alternatives networks and would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.

“An investigation is underway to establish the cause of the fault.”
