Thousands flock to Todmorden Agricultural Show

There was all the fun of the farmyard as visitors galloped from far and wide to the 85th Todmorden Agricultural Show.

With an early morning start, a full day of events, entertainment and shows were on offer for both young and old.

Held at Centre Vale Park, families enjoyed arts and crafts, a children’s pet show, vintage tractors, and dozens of trade shows and food stalls.

And special attractions including the Elaine Hill Sheepdog Display Team, racing canines in the form of The Little Nippers and cycle stunt team 3SIXTY thrilled audiences.

Kieron Hardman, Todmorden Agricultural Society president, said: “Although it rained it didn’t seem to stop the crowds, it was very busy.

“The people I spoke to really enjoyed it. There was a massive turnout in the sheep section, that was really oversubscribed.

“A lot of families came out in force and it was a really good day.

“The people really make the show, the volunteers work long and intensive days to make sure everything is right and if people come and have a good day, then we’ve been successful.

Sheep secretary Margaret Wood added: “There was a strong entry of good sheep at Todmorden Show last Saturday and the two primitive breeds of Castlemilk Moorits and Shetland sheep drew strong interest from the spectators.

“There was an excellent showing of both Native breeds and Pure Texel and local young handlers did really well proving very knowledgeable on their sheep.”

Meanwhile, students at St Joseph’s RC Primary School, Wellington Road, Todmorden, showed off their creative side as they entered the different sections in the show.

The reception children won first prize with their butterfly buns, Lola Hillock was awarded second prize with her painting of a ballerina, Owen Whittaker and Jemima Redmond scooped first prize in the painting section, Brandon Priestley and Madeline Storah came second in the painting and drawing sections, Edward Smale came second in the computer art section and Alethea Lawson came third in handwriting.

The whole of class three got first prize with their group entry,

Pupils from Walsden St Peter’s CE Primary School also won prizes, with the school scooping the Calderdale Calligraphers Annual School Award.

The Agricultural Society is currently looking to recuit new members and volunteers.

The society meet on the third Monday of every month at Todmorden Cricket Club and all are welcome to go along and get involved.
