The town is one of ten from the north west selected by the Sunday Times and published in its Sunday, March 16, 2014, edition.

The respected guide combines data and statistics such as crime rates, house prices and school performance with the local knowledge and expertise of Sunday Times writers to compile the definitive top 101 best locations to make your home.

It is a new entry on last year and number 73 in the list, but only because entries are compiled region by region.

The places were selected for offering the best quality of life to the widest number of people, and combining desirable features such as a positive community spirit, good local shops and services and attractive outdoor spaces.

Reasons ranged from the work done by Incredible Edible, the town’s market, its friendliness, a home to the arts with good commuting connections, its theatre and Centre Vale Park.

Including it in the north west list rather than the Yorkshire list thanks to its post code, the article points out the old Lancashire-Yorkshire boundary once ran through the town.

Summarising the many benefits the town has, the newspaper concluded: “Why we love it: It’s not only the edibloes that are incredible.”
