Nominated in the ‘Great Town’ category, the Calderdale town will go head to head with Blackpool and Clonakilty in Cork, Ireland.

Run by The Academy of Urbanism, the aim of the awards is to recognise the best, most enduring or most improved urban environments.

A panel met earlier in the month to decide on 10 nominations per category - others include The Great Town, Great Neighbourhood, Great Street and Great Place, as well as The European City of the Year Award.

These were then whittled down to three finalists in each category and a team of academicians will now travel to the town to compile a report and will then vote for their winner in each category.

During the visit, the team will look at the following areas:

1. Leadership and Governance: Is the Finalist well managed, inclusive, fair?
