LOCAL shops and businesses will be out in force at the second annual Totally Locally awards.

The awards aim to raise awareness of independent retailers across Calderdale

Michay Matthews, marketing, events and membership manager at Marketing Halifax, said: “The Totally Locally Awards provide us with an opportunity to further highlight the quality and diversity of our local shops.

“Local businesses have really championed the campaign and come together to support each other and the communities in which they operate.

“The awards ceremony is our way of thanking them and will see those businesses rewarded for their hard work and success.”

Totally Locally was set up by Chris Sands of You are Here Creative and implemented by Marketing Halifax with funding from Calderdale Council in October 2009.

It’s aim was to encourage shoppers to use local businesses as opposed to nationwide retailers.

There have been a range of initiatives including the Fiver Fest which asked people to spend £5 in local shops to bring an extra £40 million a year into the economy.

Chris Sands said: “The support we have received for Totally Locally has been absolutely astounding.

“We’ve had another fantastic year and it seems fitting that we have a celebration of the great businesses we have here in Calderdale.”

The award categories will cover Best Food Producer, Best Hidden Gem and Best Newcomer, with two awards for Favourite Café and Favourite Shop.

The free event will be held at The Works pub, in Sowerby Bridge, on Thursday June 30.
