THE axe is hanging over more than 600 Calderdale Council workers – but far fewer will actually lose their jobs.
Staff have been told workers who opted for voluntary redundancy would receive more compensation than if they were forced to go.
“A total of 630 have been informed their posts are at risk,” said a council spokesman.
“We expect a maximum 149 posts to go.”
The council says it wants to avoid compulsory redundancies where possible and has offered staff whose posts are at risk to apply for voluntary redundancy.
“If people are granted voluntary redundancy they will be entitled to the existing redundancy terms and conditions.”
Compulsory redundancy terms have recently been changed from a maximum of 104 weeks pay to 52 weeks.
