Firecrews called out to major moor fires

Firefighters from across the region were called out to huge moorland fires in Mytholmroyd, yesterday.

The moorland inferno at Cragg Vale could be seen for miles around.

Firefighters battled to control the flames from 12.50pm until 9.30pm, last night.

Fire crew assistance and appliances was called in from Halifax, Mytholmroyd and Elland.

It took eight fire engines, including two wildfire units from Todmorden and Holmfirth, and two helicopters to put out the flames.

Helicopters, fitted with with water buckets, were used to douse the flames from above.

Attempts to put out the flames were severely hindered by strong winds prone to changing direction.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

The B6138, Blackstone Edge Road, Cragg Road, Turvin Road was closed due to the spread of fire but has since re-opened.
