Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reels to extinguish the flames.

Road traffic police and highways agency staff closed two lanes of the carriageway to allow firefighters to safely carry out their work.

The fire is believed to have started towards the rear of the vehicle, but it was too badly damaged to discover the cause.

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

An appliance from Brighouse was sent out to a different section of the motorway as their was some confusion - caused by differing reports from members of the public - as to exactly where the HGV fire was.

Firefighters were at the scene for around 90 minutes.
