'Huge fireball explosion' on M62 near Halifax

There has been a huge tailback this evening on the M62 near Halifax after a vehicle caused a 'fireball explosion'.

The M62 eastbound was closed near Junction 22 for Rishworth Moor due to the vehicle fire.

One driver described the scene as a 'huge fireball explosion'.

The eastbound carriageway was shut at around 5.30pm.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted about the incident, urging drivers to take a different route.

They said: "Vehicle fire Eastbound at J22.

"The carriageway is closed at J22 Ripponden/Saddleworth."

A Highways England spokesman said there were no injuries and the fire is now out.

The fire is out but the road remains closed.

Traffic is now being turned around.

The motorway may be closed for ‘several hours’.

Highways England said they are still awaiting vehicle recovery.

The spokesman said there was diesel spillage on the road during the blaze.
