Safety work to be carried out at Elland waste and recycling centre

From Monday November 30 work will take place to widen access at the facility, which includes Calderdale Council’s highways depot and Elland Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC).

The Council has said the current main site entrance is narrow, which can cause difficulties, particularly at busy periods and for large vehicles, including gritters during winter.

A new layout will also be introduced– including an alternate entrance/exit point and a reversal of the one-way system for visitors to the HWRC.

In addition to improving the safety of the site, the work will also allow for the installation of a weighbridge needed for the storage of winter salt.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Councillor Jenny Lynn, said: “We’re carrying out essential works at the Ainleys highways depot site, making the site safer for staff and visitors and allowing for increased efficiency of our highways operations.

“This work is incredibly important, but in order to minimise disruption, we’ve scheduled the work to take place outside of the public opening hours.”

The HWRC will remain open throughout, with work taking place between 4pm and 7am, around the centre’s opening times. However, it will be necessary to install additional traffic management around the site, which may cause some delays. Visitors to the HWRC are therefore asked to allow extra time for their visit.

The work is due to take around five days. Once complete, visitors are asked to pay careful attention to the new signage as the direction of traffic flow will be different.
