Since Highways England started work at the end of April it has removed the existing handrail, installed a temporary fence, completed the drilling for the anchor locations for the new handrail and safety barrier and carried out concrete repairs.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "We were hoping to complete the scheme in September but unfortunately, our overnight closures planned on the M62 were cancelled due to over-running Yorkshire Water closures on the diversion route in Ripponden that couldn’t be removed.

"We’ve now rebooked new closures to complete this work for five nights from Monday September 7 to Friday 11 September and again for two nights on October 3 and 4 .

"We’ll be installing the new barrier on the central section of Scammonden Bridge which means that it wouldn’t be safe for drivers to travel underneath the structure while we’re carrying this out."

For safety the B6114 will also remain closed until the work is finished.
