Slideshow: Firefighters tackle huge fire in Halifax for 17 hours

Fire crews are preparing to leave the scene of a huge fire in Halifax after finally managing to put it out.

Firefighters from Halifax, Brighouse, Illingworth, Elland, Odsal and Stanningley were all called to the incident at an environmental waste plant off Swales Moor Road at 4.40pm yesterday (Thursday).

The fire, which involved 60 tons of woodchip, rubber and tyres, took around 17 hours to put out.

Crews are still at the scene, but were de to leave by 11am. They will return in the hour to make sure the fire has not re-ignited.

The cause of the fire is set to be looked into by a fire investigation officer and CCTV is set to be examined to assess whether the fire was started deliberately.

Two hose jets and two ground monitors were used to tackle the fire, as well as a high volume pump.

Thick black smoke could bee seen from several miles away.
