Two lanes of M62 closed after wagon fire

Two lanes of the M62 were closed for several hours this morning (Friday) after a wagon caught fire.

Fire crews from Brighouse, Elland and Huddersfield attended the incident at 12.34am on the M62 westbound between junction 24, A629 (Ainley Top) and junction 23, A640 (Huddersfield).

The fire was caused by overheating in the wheel, leading to the tyre exploding. It caused quite substantial damage to the trailer of the vehicle. The wagon was believed to be delivering food to the Merseyside area.

Crews used one hose reel and one breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire and left around 1.30pm. Nobody was injured.

The left hand and central lanes of the M62 were closed until around 3am to enable the firefighters to work safely and then for the vehicle to be recovered.

Because the incident happened close to the Ainley Top Roundabout, which was closed for improvement works, it caused chaos for motorists.
