UPDATED: Firefighters called to string of suspected arson attacks in Todmorden - two arrested

Two people have been arrested over a series of suspected arson attacks in Todmorden on Saturday.

Detectives are investigating a total of 16 incidents across the town centre including vehicles, bins and even a greengrocer’s awning on fire.

The first attack is thought to have happened on Halifax Road near its junction with Anchor Street where someone tried to set fire to the front door of a house.

At 2.51am, firefighters were called to a bin on fire in Cambridge Street.

Then at 3.23am, they were alerted to a Volkswagen Polo on fire on Rise Lane. The flames had spread to a BMW and both cars were severely damaged.

While firefighters were putting the vehicles out, they heard about a Nissan Micra on fire on nearby Hall Street, and then at 4.02am they were called to a bin on fire outside One Stop Shop in Bridge Street.

At 6.55am they were called to the Hippodrome Theatre where they said someone had tried to set a back door on fire.

They believe the bid was made at around the same time as the fire on Cambridge Street.

Two people have been arrested by police investigating the fires. They have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Detectives say they want to hear from anyone who may have information that might help their investigation.

They are looking for any witnesses, people with CCTV of the area and anyone who may have suffered a fire but not yet reported it to the police.
