Messages have been pouring in on the various Brighouse-based Facebook pages and condolence books have been opened in the Gun Dog at Siddal and Wetherspoons in Brighouse for people to pay their respects to Mr Jessop.

One of his many friends, Robert Armstead, said: “I do not exaggerate when I say that Martyn Jessop was one of best known, kindest and much-loved men in Brighouse and Halifax.

“He was a special friend not only to me but to many and his family and I have been inundated by people I thought as strangers asking if it was true.

“I have been told there are more than 300 messages remembering Martyn on the Brighouse Banter Facebook page.

“Martyn, 62, was a regular visitor to Wetherspoons.

“He was a postman in the town and also had a flower and petshop in Lightcliffe Road (opposite The Crown).

“He was affectionately known as ‘Petshop Martyn’.

“Martyn was a very much loved husband, father and grandad, who are all devasted by his loss.

“He was a very good friend to many in the Brighouse area and well known because of his work, his love of Nothern Soul and a Halifax Town supporter.

“Dare I say it, he also supported Cowdenbeath in the Scottish league.”

Martyn’s funeral will take place on Friday, October 26.

“He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”
