Yorkshire braves the deluge

In Calderdale in West Yorkshire, roads turned into streams and rivers as torrents off water poured off nearby fields and hillsides on to the ground below.Cars queued on a main road near Bradford as drivers attempted to pass through deep standing water that had collected on the carriageway.At Luddenden Foot, the River Calder and he Rochdale Canal had burst their banks, leaving a row of houses and a bowling club under water.Signs in Halifax warned drivers that roads into Todmorden and Mytholmroyd were closed due to flooding. And near Mytholmroyd, a police car was stopping traffic on the A646 Burnley Road.Heavy rains are expected to continue to affect Calderdale, Airedale (from Skipton to Leeds) and North Yorkshire including York, Pateley Bridge and Catterick.A spokesman said: "The rain has fallen on areas where the ground is already saturated and river levels are very high."Our teams are out working with partners to support communities and reduce the risk of flooding as far as possible."We are urging people to listen out for sirens and stay tuned to local media and take action when necessary."Flood sirens have already been sounded at Walsden, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd in Calderdale.Environment Agency duty manager Frank de Planta said: "With heavy rain continuing to fall across West and North Yorkshire today and into tonight, we urge people to remain vigilant and check their flood risk for the latest flood updates."We also want to remind people never to drive through flood water, just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move your car."

A number of Boxing Day football and racing events have been called off due to the weather. Both days of Wetherby's Christmas racing fixture have been cancelled as were the following football fixtures: Bury v Barnsley, Bradford v Burton, Wigan v Sheff Utd, York v Northampton, Guiseley v Grimsby.
