Uncertainty as international firm begins consultation on closing Halifax manufacturing plant

Workers at Renold Hi-Tec Couplings, Parkinson Lane, were told that all manufacturing operations could move to Cardiff under latest proposals to ‘create a stable platform for the future’.

The group, which has offices across the globe, makes chains, gears and couplings. There are 40 employees at Halifax and, subject to consultation, 33 jobs potentially at risk

A spokesperson said: “As part of its Step2020 strategic plan, Renold continues to implement initiatives to lower the Company’s breakeven point, increase operational efficiencies, improve the supply chain, remain competitive, and reduce levels of excess capacity.

“In line with this, we have today commenced a consultation process and entered into formal discussions with employees and their representatives at our UK Couplings facility in Halifax on the proposed closure of the facility and the transfer of all manufacturing operations to Cardiff.

“We know that this will be a period of uncertainty for our staff at Halifax and we are committed to consulting fully with our employees and their representatives.

“This consultation process is, however, a necessary step in increasing operational efficiencies in UK Couplings and creating a stable platform for the future.”
