UPDATE: Solar eclipse over Harrogate

The first partial solar eclipse in 16 years took place over a cloudy Harrogate this morning.

The phenomena should have shown 84 per cent of the sun obscured by the moon at locations around the UK.

But in Harrogate clouds covered most of the visibility, with only glimpses of the eclipse taking place.

Starting at 8.24am, the eclipse reached its maximum by 9.30am.

The eclipse should continue until after 10am as the effects of general darkening and cooling of the atmosphere should reverse.

The last total eclipse visible from the UK was on August 11 1999, when the moon totally covered the sun as it crossed over Cornwall.

Another ‘deep’ partial eclipse visible in the UK will not occur until August 12, 2026, and the next total eclipse not until September 2090.
