FORTY firefighters spent around five hours battling a blaze which has swept across moorland in Calderdale last night.

Seven appliances and two specialist wildfire units were needed to tackle the fire off Lumb Lane in Wainstalls.

They were alerted at 5.15pm yesterday and were there until 10pm.

Around a square mile of land was damaged by the blaze.

Firefighters said strong winds had caused the flames to spread.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
