The team of motivated women, who all met at Buggy4Fitness classes, are determined to show cancer that hell hath no fury like a mum in pink at the 5k event in Savile Park on Sunday July 19.

Team member and mum of two Cecilia Marsh, 37, will be taking part in Race for Life with her three and a half month old baby Alis and toddler Eliza, 3.

Cecilia, of Holywell Green, has very personal reason for taking part as her mum Lynne, 69, is still undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma two years ago.

Her mum was admitted to hospital after she had been feeling unwell for some time.

Doctors initially found cancer in her brain and lungs, but thought this was because she had a large primary cancer somewhere else in her body. The family were given the devastating news that it was terminal.

However, further tests showed the cancer was actually an unusual form of lymphoma and the good news was that Lynne would benefit from chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.

Cecilia said: “To be told your mum has terminal cancer was just so horrible, so we were delighted when they then said they’d be able to treat her. Thankfully, the chemo has completely cleared the cancer from her lungs and the radiotherapy has shrunk the cancer in her brain back to one small lesion.

“She’s now recovering. She’s not ok and will never get back to how she was, but she’s still here with us. She’s been able to see her first grandchild, Eliza, growing up and saw the arrival of her second grandchild, Alis, which was a very important milestone for all of us.

“She is an amazing mum and she’ll be really proud of me doing Race for Life.”

The team, which includes six mums and their children, is led by personal fitness trainer and founder of Buggy4Fitness, Sharon Porter, who runs sessions for new mums and their babies at parks across Calderdale, including Savile Park where Race for Life is taking place.
