Video: Police confront aggressive crowd after road crash in Ravensthorpe

A 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent following a car crash which resulted in a crowd of 150 gathering in a Dewsbury retail park.

At around 10.30pm yesterday (Thursday), a silver Vauxhall Insignia was in collision with a group of people in Charles Street, Ravensthorpe.

Five people were injured in the incident. One person was taken to hospital and has been released from hospital today (Friday) with minor injuries.

A 17-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and remains in police custody.

After the incident, a group of around 150 people congregated in the area. Some became aggressive but police dispersed the crowd with the help and support of community leaders.

Chief Inspector Paula Booth said: “We would like to thank the local community in advance, for supporting the police at this time and helping us to do our job.

“This was a serious incident and we understand people’s concerns, but some of the behaviour officers had to deal with last night was unacceptable.

“Officers patrolled the area throughout the night and will continue to patrol the area to provide reassurance and talk to witnesses.”
