The exhibition is part of Calderdale's wide-sweeping plans to mark a century since the end of World War I. Various services and celebrations will take place this weekend across the region.

The Mayor of Calderdale Council, Coun Marcus Thompson, said: “The poppy exhibition at Halifax Town Hall is an impressive, poignant and fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in the First World War and other conflicts before and since.

“The remembrance symbol of the poppy means so much to so many, and the idea of the exhibition has really captured people’s interest. I’d like to thank everyone who contributed as part of a tremendous community effort, with people of all ages submitting their own creations to the hundreds of poppies on display.

“This artistic display is a moving symbol of remembrance in this important centenary anniversary year and wonderfully complements commemorations taking place across the borough.”

Coun Marilyn Greenwood, who has helped to organise the exhibition, said: "Thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way to make this exhibition truly great.

"A real show of community unity across all age groups and all abilities, this exhibition belongs to the people of Calderdale. I hope to be involved in something similar again following the success of this exhibition."
