A woman fulfilled the wish of a lifetime when she flew into her surprise 90th birthday party by helicopter.
A flight in a helicopter had always been on Monica Purdy’s “bucket list”, but approaching her 90th year she thought she had left the chance long behind.
But kind-hearted family members hatched a secret plan to make Monica’s dream a reality and mark her special day - April 2 - in an unforgettable way.
Monica’s nephew, Brian Webster, 62, said: “A helicopter trip was something she’s wanted to do but thought had got away from her. She was gobsmacked and although the trip from Yeadon to the Rock at Holywell Green was fairly short I have it on good authority she didn’t come down until well after midnight.
“As the helicopter was landing she thought it was great that the locals had come out to wave and even more amazed to find 24 members of the family waiting to join her in a celebration birthday meal.
“She now hopes to knock off another “bucket list” item – the London Eye – sometime soon.”
Monica was born in Warley but relocated to Kent with the Women’s Land Army, where she has lived ever since.
She enjoys trips to Yorkshire to stay with her nieces and despite joint replacements, leads an active life and still plays bowls at her local village hall.
