A WIDOW has set herself the challenge of hiking the Inca Trail in Peru in memory of her husband Jim Motley, who died from cancer aged 45 last year.
And Karen Motley will be joined by David Copping, who has since learned he carries the same hereditary gene that killed his uncle.
The trip, in October 2012, is being organised by the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, Leeds, as part of its £10 million fundraising drive.
But participants must raise at least £3,250 each and Mrs Motley hopes to raise a staggering £10,000.
The fund-raising kicks off with an evening at Sowerby Bridge WMC on October 7 this year, including live music and a raffle.
Mrs Motley, 42, of Shibden, Halifax, mum to Daniel, eight, and Lydia, five, said her husband had fantastic treatment at the cancer centre for his illness, which attacked the adrenal gland.
“Everybody is still reeling from his death and our son has the gene as well,” she said.
Mr Motley, a joiner, was a fit man and coped well with his illness after being diagnosed aged 42.

But the cancer spread and he developed a tumour in his spine from which he never recovered.
During his illness he had planned a cycle trek in Cuba but couldn’t get travel insurance so his wife and nephew have taken up the fund-raising on his behalf.
Youth worker Mr Copping, 28, of Friendly, said when it was found out the illness was hereditary the family were tested.
“There was a 50 per cent chance of having the condition. I did but my brother Lee didn’t,” he said.
His mum, Jeanette and two cousins also tested positive.
But Mr Copping and his mum were also found to be carrying benign tumours and underwent surgery.
All family members with the faulty gene will now have regular tests.
“It was a big shock. Me and my mum were just living our lives normally,” said Mr Copping.
“It has been life-changing and I now look at life differently and don’t spend time worrying. It’s more about thinking how lucky we are.
“And, having gone through my treatment I wanted to give something back.”
