A First World War memorial is due to be restored to its former glory after concerns were raised about its poor condition.

Calderdale Council say they are planning to carry out maintenance work to every war memorial in the area, including the one situated at the Triangle Inn pub.

A nearby resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It is very disappointing to see the current poor state of the building and the memorial outside.

“I find it difficult to reconcile the current appearance with any remembrance of the sacrifice or even the simple history of the area and its people.”

Calderdale Council’s Head of Neighbourhoods, Andrew Pitts, said: “Calderdale Council is working with the War Memorials Trust to maintain all 28 memorials across the borough - 15 of which commemorate the First World War.

“The war memorial on the outside wall of the Triangle Inn is included in this restoration project. The memorial has recently been inspected and a stone mason will shortly be assessing what work is needed.

“It’s thought that with a few small repairs this memorial will be restored to its former glory, remaining a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for their country.”
