A spokesman said: “Many places will remain dry this afternoon, but there is potential for some heavy showers and thunderstorms to break out. Be aware of the possibility of surface water flooding and disruption to travel where torrential downpours do occur.

“Thunderstorms are most likely to break out over high ground this afternoon, but there is potential for these to drift into low lying, urban areas. The torrential downpours will be slow moving and there could be more than 20mm in an hour locally, with more than 40mm in a few hours possible.

“Additionally, the thunderstorms will be accompanied by hail and frequent lightning strikes.”
