White Ribbon Campaign UK is launching its campaign, End Violence this Valentine’s, across West Yorkshire schools.
In Calderdale, 34.6 per cent of violent crimes are classed as domestic. The national average is between 16 and 25 per cent and the charity estimates domestic abuse costs Calderdale £35.8 million each year.
The charity’s director, Chris Green, said: “Young people sometimes think its okay to hit their partner if, say, they have cheated, flirted with someone else or are drunk. No one ever asks to be abused and there is never an excuse.
“We need to reach young people to prevent abuse in the next generation one way or another. Domestic abuse touches all our lives. It’s up to all of us to take a stand and sort it out.”
