Widdop Point to cope with increased demand for water

Yorkshire Water have confirmed that the reservoir is currently at 81 per cent capacity and is capable of maintaining the supply to Calderdale’s towns despite temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.

Daily water consumption levels are predicted to hit 1.4 billion litres in Yorkshire during the hot spell, and underground storage units in Barnsley and Bradford have been filled to meet demand.

The average adult customer uses between 130-150 litres per day - enough to fill two bathtubs. The company is offering free water saving packs through their website to reduce consumption.

Tips include showering instead of taking a bath, turning taps off when brushing teeth, only using the washing machine with a full load and fitting a flush saver device in toilet cisterns.

Yorkshire Water is also warning youngsters not to swim in reservoirs during the hot weather, as large bodies of water can be deceptively cold, deep and home to dangerous objects beneath the surface.
