Yacht a big adventure for charity sailor Dale

A SAILOR will brave the wild and windy seas for six weeks to raise money in memory of his friend who died of cancer.

Dale Deacon, 44, will circumnavigate the entire coastline of the UK in a 46-ft cruising yacht.

The trip is in memory of his friend Mark Brumpton, a patient at Overgate Hospice during his battle with cancer.

The adventurous pair met while taking part in scuba diving trips around the UK.

“A lot of my time with Mark was spent huddling together on little boats on rough seas so I thought the sailing was an appropriate way of raising the money,” he said.

The trip will cover more than 2,000 miles and leave from Falmouth.

Mark, who lived in Blackley, but worked across Halifax, died aged 48 in 2008. He had battled cancer for four years and spent three months at the hospice.

“It’s incredible there. God forbid I’d ever be in those circumstances myself but if I was that would be the place I’d want to be. When you can’t be in your own home and you don’t need to be in hospital you’d want a place like Overgate.”

Dale, from Bradford, has dabbled in sailing before, but is now psyching himself up for the varied weather conditions he will encounter.

“We’re gearing up for every type of weather from sunshine to gale force winds and we have plenty of sea sickness tablets on board,” he said.

He has set himself a target of £10,000 but is already just £500 short of that with five months to go. He has even set about contacting every Calderdale councillor asking them to make a donation, and already has seven ticked off the list as well as Halifax MP Linda Riordan.
