Young volunteer receives award for reading scheme

North Yorkshire Libraries have recognised the help provided by young volunteers during the summer holidays.

Some 138 volunteers, aged 13-24, helped with Record Breakers, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge which offered incentives including stickers and a medal for children aged 4-11 who manage to read six books during the break.

Volunteer Ben Johnson, 15, was the lucky winner of one of seven £50 high street vouchers, funded by the Cabinet Office, offered in a prize draw for all those who contributed 10 hours or more of their time over the summer. Ben Johnson contributed 28 hours at Harrogate Library.

Many of the young volunteers will be staying on to help with future events.
