Terrific to see that Yorkshire has been named the UK’s best holiday destination, beating competition from other counties including Cornwall, Cumbria, and Devon.
What makes it even more pleasing is that the award was voted for by travel agents around the world and reflects the fact that more than 200 million folk visit our glorious county each year. I can only echo the words of Gary Verity, the chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, in saying that the win is testament to all the thousands of fantastic businesses we have in Yorkshire and the warmth and hospitality of our people that time and again put the county on the map for millions of holidaymakers, not just in Britain, but the world over. I would also urge all your readers to bring even more people to the county by signing up to the “Back le Bid” campaign to host the opening stage of the Tour de France in 2016, specifically up Cragg Road, the longest continuous hillclimb in England. After this sensational “Summer of Sport” let’s see if we can get Wiggo (and his sideburns) to enjoy the delights of our own corner of heaven in “God’s own County”.
