I was prompted to write this letter after joining one of our school’s Communication group lessons as I felt it was important to let people know what a valuable asset they have on their doorstep.
A group of our students attend Skircoat Library every Thursday morning and over the last eighteen months have blossomed, with their usage of social language in social settings increasing dramatically. Ravenscliffe High School and Sports College is Calderdale’s only specialist secondary school, providing education for 139 students aged 11-19 years. The school caters for pupils with a wide range of Special Educational Needs, including moderate and severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, Autistic spectrum disorders, sensory impairment and physical disabilities. A small percentage have identified moderate emotional and behavioural difficulties. The teaching and support staff who attend Skircoat Library have praised the welcome and input they receive from Gillian the Librarian into their weekly library sessions. Gillian makes the group feel really welcome and this has developed the self-esteem and self-confidence of our students, which in turn develops an increasing use of language. We feel that Gillian and Skircoat Library are a wonderful asset to our school community and also in a time of ongoing financial cut backs it would be a shame to lose this valuable service to the local community.
