Further to the letter of Ron Cotton (no relation) regarding new road safety measures in Elland (Your say, April 15) I would like to add my two penn’orth.
I think he hits the nail on the head in stating that councils have to spend money at this time of year. In other words, they have to waste money to ensure their budget is not reduced for the following year.
The real world doesn’t work like that: if money can be saved then it should be saved for essential purposes.
Next news they will be complaining that they don’t have enough money to mend all the potholes caused by last winter’s cold snap.
Calderdale seems to lack any planning whatsoever as far as traffic management is concerned - I am still upset when I think of the money wasted at West Vale installing filter lights at the junction and then immediately covering them up and later removing them.
Calderdale must be the only town where there are traffic hold ups outside rush hours, the Calder and Hebble area being the one that springs to mind and which would be fairly easy to lessen by painting a few white lines.
Didn’t the Building Society have to contribute a substantial sum towards changes at this junction when they got planning permission to build at Copley?
