Ayre looses cancer battle

FORMER Halifax Town boss Billy Ayre has died after a long battle against cancer.

The 49-year-old was in charge at the Shay from December 1986 to March 1990 and during his four-year spell helped keep the club afloat by selling 1million worth of playing talent.

He was appointed managing director of the club in February 1989 and signed a four-year contract as boss in July the same year.

In addition to his spell at the Shay, where he was also a player, Ayre had spells as manager of Blackpool, Scarborough and Cardiff City.

He was also assistant as Swansea, Lincoln City and, most recently, Bury.

Ayre announced last year that he was ill although it had been thought he had beaten the disease.

But Bury FC, where he has been assistant report that he was taken ill yesterday and passed away last night.
