In a closely fought contest the judges awarded Stubbs a unanimous victory against an opponent due to turn to the professional ranks in early 2016.

Coach John Lewis described Stubbs as “a true champion”, whose skills have come “leaps and bounds” in the last few years.

Lewis said: “His confidence and fitness are always improving and he’s got a big year ahead of him now.”

Stubbs’ victory comes after he won the Yorkshire ABA Open Heavyweight for a third time in November last year.

The Harrogate Boxing Club member has trained at the Team GB headquarters four times and Lewis reckons he has got what it takes to make it into the national squad.

“He’s on their radar now and with a bit of luck he could be there soon,” he added.
