THE third round of the Calderdale Championship produced some interesting games, both over the board and the draw itself.
The leading players in both Division's One and Two were drawn against each other. John Morgan, the out-right leader and playing with the white pieces, beat Matthew Wedge-Roberts who lies half a point behind him in Division One.
Division Two leaders Tom Webster, a comparative new player in the League, had the white pieces against Steve Priest who is a player renowned for his gritty and solid technique. However, Priest was somewhat lacklustre, allowing Webster to make a somewhat suspect bishop sacrifice and declining to capture it, allowing his opponent to win a pawn and the exchange (bishop for rook).
The game of the round was on board two where white must have thought there were strong possibilities of a draw. However, black had other ideas. The following analysis is by one of the strongest computer programmes on the market.
WHITE: Robert Sutcliffe
BLACK: Matthew Parsons
