Alarm bells ring for Lightcliffe

It all started so promisingly when skipper Alex Stead (81) and Josh Wheatley (51) added 108 for the first wicket before Wheatley fell to the first ball of the 26th over.

The innings stalled after that with in-form off-spinner Mark Harrison (five for 48) doing the damage.

Lightcliffe were still looking strong at 170 for four in the 44th over but had to settle for 193 for nine.

Farsley, who had started the day in the bottom two, had few problems knocking off the runs, helped by a second-wicket stand of 113 between Jack Holland (64) and Yorkshire second teamer Dan Hodgson (82 no).

Brighouse looked to have a good opportunity for Division Two points away to struggling Idle and grabbed their chance.

Todmorden’s dismal form in this year’s Lancashire League Twenty/20 competition continued on Friday with a fourth straight group defeat, this time by nine wickets at Rishton.

The Centre Vale men could only muster 93 and South African pro Kelly Smuts hit 63 for the hosts before falling to Stuart Priestley with his side on the brink of victory.

A promising debut from Jonathan Lee was one of the few bright points as Northowram Fields lost by 113 runs at Hopton Mills.

Lee, who joined from Baildon in midweek, took three for 31 but couldn’t stop the hosts motoring to 277 all out on their small ground with opener Ashley Mackereth making 72.

Dewsbury RLFC coach Glen Morrison’s 33 was best in the visitors’ reply of 161 and Northowram are down to fifth.

Andy Dixon made 55 and Stephen Cook took four for 47 but Illingworth had to play second fiddle throughout to high-flying opponents Horsforth in Division Two of the Aire/Wharfe League and lost by 85 runs.
