Batting trio propel Thornton to victory and Premier summit

Thornton hit the top of the ENCO Halifax Cricket League Premier Division thanks to Saturday’s six-wicket win over fellow high flyers Illingworth St Mary's.

Saints posted a challenging 232-8, with Matthew Smith (66) and Shazad Hassan (55) top-scoring, but the hosts were up for the challenge and Grant Soames (78), Ben Burkill (46) and Bradley Weatherhead (45 not out) pushed their team to 233-4 in the 43rd over.

Previous leaders Sowerby St Peter's came back to earth with an eight-wicket reverse at Upper Hopton.

Saints limped to 88 all out as Charlie Wightman registered career best figures of 13-5-31-6. Hopton needed fewer than 14 overs to achieve maximum points in a 90-2 response, of which Michael Rounding hit 60 not out in 43 balls.

The hosts cruised to a eight-wicket win in the 39th over thanks to Rob Laycock (81 not out), Jon Midgley (52) and Max Rawson (44).

Oxenhope won the toss and batted first at Copley, posting a challenging 256-9 with Lewis Brown (71), Ben Howell (66 not out) and Alex Baker (43) among the runs.

That target proved too high for the hosts who fell 25 runs short, at 231 all out, despite half-centuries from Sid Gomersall (61) and Will Rushton (53). Liam Witney cleaned up with 4-62.

Bradshaw's loss of several senior players is having a serious effect on their performances and they suffered a second successive heavy defeat, this time at Luddendenfoot.

Only 15.5 overs were needed by the unchanged duo of Liam Senior (6-19) and Tom Scott (4-31) to despatch the visitors for 60 all out. The Foot did not find it easy in reply but eventually reached 61-6, thanks in the main to Jacob Whitehouse (31), as Johnny Lister took 4-14.

Previous First Division leaders Clayton visited Great Horton PC and were in deep trouble at 44-6 before the lower middle order and tail boosted the score to 144 all out, as Nayab Khan took 4-37.

Horton, again led by Adam Beesley (53), announced their promotion ambitions as they compiled 145-3 in the 36th over to take over at the top.

Low Moor HT scored 197-7, at home to Greetland, as six batters scored double-figures led by Dan Robinson (43 not out) and Tony Dowling (42).

After Aber Saghir (50) had departed, with Greetland at 104-5, the match was in the balance but Aamir Riaz then took centre stage and blasted 60 not out in 42 balls to ensure a Greetland win at 200-5.

Ashrafali Abed, with a career best 91, and Ismail Mayat (45) scored over 70 per-cent of Mount's 188 all out in the home match versus Cullingworth, eight of their other batters failing to reach double figures.

The visitors’ reply never really got into any groove, losing wickets at regular intervals and always behind the scoring rate. No player topped 35 runs and they reached 159 all out in 43.4 overs.

Mytholmroyd chose to field first at Oakworth and dismissed the hosts for 148 all out. Jake Keslinke (43) was the only home batter to progress as Milo Robbins (4-23) and Jack Earle (4-39) were among the wickets.

The Royd had little difficulty in claiming maximum points, winning as early as the 29th over. Openers Jacob Travis (56 not out) and Tom Earle (48) were at the forefront of a winning score of 149-2.

Promoted Southowram had a First Division reality check at Hullen Edge, where Warley & Elland won by 33 runs.

The hosts posted 168 all out with Zeeshan Iqbal (56) top scoring. Neil Eastwood returned 6-38 but his team could muster only 135 all out.

Tom Belfield (47) was the batter to feature as Jack Oldfield took 5-28.

Queensbury are joint leaders of the Second Division after winning a feisty contest at Lindley Moor Road against fellow promotion contenders Outlane.

The visitors batted first and posted 210 all out with Oliver Challis (66) and Chris Kibble (65) topping the scoring, the Outlane bowling credits going to Asfaq Patel (4-58) and Ajmal Khan (4-67).

The home side slumped from 96-1 to 145 all out, with only Tom Lamb (46) and Anurag Bhope (43) producing scores of note. The main destroyer was Darren Jack, with figures of 11.4-2-26-6.

Bridgeholme are, surprisingly, the other joint leaders and in their visit to Bradley & Colnebridge, the hosts were grateful to skipper Saeed Mohammed (49) for his contribution, in the low score of 85 all out.

The visitors just scraped home, with a score of 86-9, thanks to a last wicket partnership of 21 runs from Sajjad Mahmood (14 not out) and Khalid Mahmood (8 not out). Their efforts frustrated Khalid Khan (5-27) and Kamran Khan (4-49), in gaining that final wicket.

There was a close contest at Leymoor for whom Eddie Raw (61) led the way to a total of 245-7 against Old Town.

With Jack Earnshaw taking 4-82, the Town fell just 14 runs of victory as Muhammad Nabeel (77) top scored in a total of 232 all out.

Augustinians pulled off a shock on their visit to Stainland, winning by seven wickets.

They totally demolished the home team's batting for 43 all out in less than 20 overs. Inderjitsingh Dhillon recorded figures of 9-6-9-5.

The visitors required a meagre 16 overs to reach a winning 46-3.

Stones also triumphed as they saw-off visitors Sowerby Bridge by 122 runs.
