Calderdale trio win in cup

Barkisland, Elland and Rastrick all won away ties in the Huddersfield League's Sykes Cup yesterday.

Barkisland bounced back from Saturday’s league defeat at the hands of Rastrick with a 10-wicket success at Linthwaite.

The hosts were bowled out for 116 with Australian opening bowler Sam Moyle taking 4-24 and spinner Matthew Steers 3-20.

George Hampshire, one of Barkisland’s latest recruits from Halifax League club SBCI, made 53 not out and Luke Bridges 52 not out to wrap up victory.

Elland also won by the maximum margin after Kiwi Alex Hodgson (4-7), skipper Alastair Finn (3-13) and Peter Dobson (3-5) demolished Upperthong for 48.

Greg Alexander got 32 of the runs needed to complete victory.

Rastrick look to have a real talent on their hands in new opener Majid Khan, who followed up Saturday’s 126 not out at Barkisland with 96 and three wickets as Rastrick won at Kirkheaton in the cup.

A tricky wicket and long grass in the outfield was always going to make scoring runs a challenging proposition but Ovais Hussain and Khan built a century partnership.

The innings faded away in the latter stages after Khan had departed but a score of 206-8 was a considerable one.

The Kirkheaton reply quickly faltered as hostile left arm paceman James Anderson struck with three early wickets. They never really recovered and were all out for 92 with Asif Afridi picking up four wickets and Majid Khan three with his off-spin.
